I had the same problem with a pair of hiking boots, I did what EagleJCS did as well as put a patch of duct tape at the bottom of the heal, and bingo no more eaten socks. Hiking socks can run almost as much as kilt hose so I was happy to find a solution.
Why Duct tape? Low co-efficient of friction.

Good God, man! What kind of socks are you hiking in? I wear Smartwool's expedition socks, and they are only about $20 a pair.
Anyways, jot me down for another vote of trying that old surefire trick, duct tape. I've used it for this same purpose on some non-kilt footwear and it did the trick wonderfully. Plus you get to feel a little like MacGyver.
