You just have to change your technique.

I've been wearing bowties every day for the last couple of months, kilted and without the kilt (that'd be with p@nts, ye dirty-minded scoundrels!).

When I wear neckties, I like the length to fall about where the top of a kilt waistband would fall. Hence, I tie them about the same length whether worn with a kilt or p@nts.
