Most kiltmakers who are trained in Scotland were trained to make a specific style of kilt in a very specific way, so it's really no surprise to find that they resist or simply have no interest in making kilts differently. No biggie....
I am delighted to say Matt, on this, I agree with you! :lol

I agree... they're not as common and the makers make them a lot less commonly than regularly-pleated 5 or 8 yeard modern kilts - but the makers can still do them. I was planning to get my first box pleat before my funds dropped significantly and I had to phone some places as they werent advertised on their website. Most places offer them for 50% added onto there 8 yard standard-pleated kilts... which is often £300-400 at most.
I never phoned one place in Glasgow - nor Edinburgh that said they couldnt do them. A couple of places said it takes their maker longer, a couple said they would have to use a different maker - but they all knew where to get them and how much they would roughly cost. I think the highest I was quoted was £450 and the lowest was £280 for a 8yard box-pleated.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Seeing as he's made both knife pleated kilts and box pleated kilts; 8 yard kilts, 6 yard kilts and 4 yard kilts, Alan H just smiles, drops the whole subject and wanders off to elsewhere on the forum...

Several months ago I asked Rocky (at USA Kilts) to make me a box-pleated kilt. He told me he does not do that but he can have it done in Scotland at small additional cost in time and money. I chose to have him make one of his knife-pleated kilts, and am well pleased with the result.

I can make two 4-yard box-pleated kilts for the same cost as one 8-yard knife pleated kilt. Box-pleated kilts are balanced and a pleasure to wear; cool enough for summer and warm enough for winter. I don't have to crank down on the straps just to keep the ponderous mass of 8 yards of wool from obeying the laws of gravity when I walk. When I sit down I don't feel like I'm perched on a stadium blanket.
