Well, then, since you're concerned about what it LOOKS like an opossum has been eating, I won't tell you what most commercially raised chickens really ARE eating. I'll just leave you wondering. Which is worse. Because I'm mean.

What are they eating? I thought their diet was better than most humans. Corn, soy, cooked fish and meat meals, vitamins and minerals added when necessary. Anything else?

Well, the chickens we have around our place tend to eat sagebrush...(sage grouse AKA prairie chickens) and they're pretty tasty.

As a funny side not on the subject of grouse...I was once throwing my Lab's dead fowl trainer for her and tossed it into a bush. The dog came back with a fledgling prairie chicken in her mouth. It was unharmed and just looking around as if to say, "Where am I?"

You bet! Tasty is the word for sage hens. I found the young to be the best, as the older birds could be pretty 'sagey' in Eastern Montana. One secret is to not overcook them.

One day, hunting sharptails and sage grouse, I watched a couple of birds sail off out of range. A very beautiful sight. I got a strange feeling, in a weird sort of way. Looked down at my feet and saw this:

I have often wondered how many, many years this lay out in the sun and snow. And what all had trod past, and why.
