If I may offer one small suggestion though for the next time you don your finery. I would forgo the pocket watch and chain with any black or white tie outfit. For one reason, they don't look quite right with the three button waist coat. Another is that when is dressed to the nines like that time should be unimportant.

    Cheers

Traditionally, if you wanted to carry your time piece on your person with formal attire, one carried it in your waistcoat pocket as usual, but without the chain. Instead, one had a "fob". It was a short piece of silk cloth, some times fine woven gold, or silver ,perhaps two inches wide and perhaps about four inches long. It had a clip on one end for the watch and some sort of elaborate "thing" on the other that just hung out of your pocket. Imagine, if you will, something like a medal ribbon with the watch on one end and the ribbon and medal hanging from the pocket.

Slightly off topic, I know, but as we are talking about pocket watches-----. Do you know which side of you waistcoat to carry your watch in? Now this in not carved in stone, so don't get all fired up here! Well, we were always taught that one should be able to write and tell the time at the same time, so if you write with your right hand, then it is usual to carry your pocket watch in your right waistcoat pocket ,so you can reach across with your left hand comfortably. You write with your left hand? Then the watch is in your left pocket.

Aaah, something like that would have been grand! The pockets are quite small, so the watch must most definitely have some fastening device of some sort. I'll have to remember to keep an eye out for a chain of the likes of yours!

Jock Scot; No logic behind my choice of pocket. Just chance I guess. But being right handed, it seems I stumbled across the "right" pocket!

Thank you all for your warm comments. It did feel very good to wear a kilt, and it is truly a way of dressing that will be used more in the days, months and years to come! The wardrobe just needs a bit expanding in terms of less formal attire, but when that is checked of the list, the kilt will be worn more frequent!

    Sandford and Jock,

Thanks for enlightening me on these formal fobs, I was completely unaware of them. I knew that the chain wasn't used and had been told that time pieces weren't to be visible at formal events (checking one's watching being a sign that one had other things to do or was impatient for the event to be over).

It is always a good thing to start the day knowing something you didn't yesterday!

    Cheers

Glad to be of help Jamie. Actually a discreet thin gold watch chain going from pocket to pocket, via a button hole on the waistcoat, is perfectly acceptable for evening dress these days.
