Despite the weapons laws, it is a very dangerous place (some areas more so than others, of course). I would pay very close attention to any other US Consulate warnings on areas to avoid due to drug violence, kidnappings, murders, etc.
Yep, Some of the 'busier' border towns had 2,000 homicides last year. Ciudad Juarez had like 195 in one month. I'd keep the Sgian Dubh and myself at home!

well, you didn't say you were going to the Eastern Yucatan! Thats were they keep Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel. The tourist areas there are the main income, and are pretty secure, lots of police and private security around.
Funny about the knife thing, when we were in Cozumel I was wearing jeans because we went horseback riding, and I clipped a folder in my pocket just like every other day!
