I guess I just don't trust myself yet in coming up with kilt-based outfits more complicated than a t-shirt, rugby shirt, or sweatshirt. 
Put it on, and see what it looks like. If you don't wear a sporran, the lack of a cutaway front for it isn't that big a deal. I wear a sport coat over a casual modern kilt from time to time. looks fine.
