After seeing the shades in Turpin's kilt, I vote for that. And Turpin, where did you get that belt and buckle? They're fantastic

Hey, Turpin. Would that kilt be worn at mid rise? It looks lower than traditional, maybe even low enough to be at pants level. How do you get a kilt maker to do that? Just tell them to make a shorter length? Wouldn't that muck up the hang?

I'm the one who made Turpin's kilt. It's a four yard, box pleated kilt, made from Lochcarron's 16 oz strome tartan cloth.
Here are the measuring instructions I have people follow when they submit measurements to me.

I make the kilts with a 2" rise, plus or minus, unless the client specifies otherwise.
When I wear mine, my belly button falls about the middle of my belt buckle (assuming I'm wearing a belt!).

Those weathered kilts of Turpin and Ron's are blinking lovely. I'd go with that shade Jock. I'm hankering for a weathered B/W which is the same without the yellow stripe. Be a while before I start another kilt buy though. Not unless I fancy living in a tent.

The weathered Gordon is nice for outdoors but I don't think it's dressy enough for anything else (I personally don't like the brown colour and much prefer the muted shades of House of Edgar). If you don't want the dark modern tartan (and you're replacing a Dress Gordon kilt) then I would recomend the Ancient Colours. The yellow line doesn't show quite as well but the green and blue are fantastic.
The Kilt is my delight !

I think I know what you mean: the brown shades of "weathered" kilts look great with brownish tweed day jackets etc.
But I've seen "weathered" kilts worn with full Evening Dress and they look just fine to me. Just another colour scheme in my opinion.

I got the belt and buckle from Oconee Leather Works, by our own Cavscout.

Not sure what you mean. I wear it so that the top of the belt is hitting right about at my navel, so it has about a 1.5 inch rise. That's how it came from Matt Newsome, and I gave him nothing but my measurements taken per his instructions.
