I'm the one who made Turpin's kilt. It's a four yard, box pleated kilt, made from Lochcarron's 16 oz strome tartan cloth.
Here are the measuring instructions I have people follow when they submit measurements to me.

I make the kilts with a 2" rise, plus or minus, unless the client specifies otherwise.
When I wear mine, my belly button falls about the middle of my belt buckle (assuming I'm wearing a belt!).

Those weathered kilts of Turpin and Ron's are blinking lovely. I'd go with that shade Jock. I'm hankering for a weathered B/W which is the same without the yellow stripe. Be a while before I start another kilt buy though. Not unless I fancy living in a tent.
