I'll agree with the others that there aren't that many times when a crossbelt would be needed. There might be some, but mainly few and far between. The black/nickel has a very formal appearance to me. If it were brown/brass you might find more casual situations.
One thought I've been kicking around for day wear is to make a leather satchel with a wide shoulder strap giving the appearance of a cross-belt. You might look at mounting a wide satchel bag to the cross-belt in lieu of the scabbard. That would at least make it more practical and functional and that can tend to help accessories "work" better with an outfit when they have a purpose.
Something like this but with a slightly wider strap

A couple of strategically placed d-rings or trigger snaps would allow you to attach your sporran to serve as a "cartridge box" type bag while hiking when a sporran would not be quite as comfortable worn traditionally and not preclude you from still using it as a sword belt at other events.

I know I already responded to this, but I would like to step back to it for a moment if I may.
I was perusing the welcome threads and saw this picture posted by Robert (Ancienne Alliance):

Now I could be wrong, but what you described looks a lot like what he has done in the picture. Robert, if you see this, could you describe what it is you're wearing there? It's hard to tell because it's black, but it looks like a cross-belt holding a satchel or bag of some sort. And you look smashing, as always!

I love cross-belts. Even if they serve no function. I have been trying to find a cheap one, or make one. I also have some evil machinations towards a double cross belt with a large pauldron on one side. Since I dont have any now, suspenders, crossed infront with a nice buckle, really are all I can do.
Would some say its a costume? Yes
Would I care? Not really
You only get one go around the world, so I dont plan on saving any plans for the second go-around.

Quite - life is not a dress rehearsal.
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

Yeah, but that's Robert! I don't know of many other individuals with his poise, grace and general style.
I say wear it in good health. Life's too short to quibble about details, but heavy weaponry is a P.I.T.A, if you can't finish off an opponent with a sgian or a nut to the face, your chances with a sword are minimal at best
