Actually the Brian Boru was one of three designs intended to create a similar, but different, look for Irish kilt wearers. The BB was/is intended to compliment the popularity of the PC, while the other two jackets mirrored the regulation doublet and the Sheriffmuir/Montrose jackets.

As designed, the entire ensemble comprised the BB jacket & waistcoat, red hose (according to the costume and textile department at the National Museum of Ireland red hose enjoyed a certain vogue in 18th and early 19th century Ireland) and buckle shoes with unblocked square toes. The sporran is intended to be a red fox with mask, and the sporran strap should be red leather.
