Quite right. It's a popular form of evening shoe for Highlanders or perhaps pipers. Kenneth Macleay's, The Highlanders of Scotland, have many examples of Highland men wearing ghillie brogues with buckles on the toes. And OCRichard posted an old Highland dress catalogue that had the same style of shoe for sale, complete with a photo. I shall make myself a pair at some point with a quality, bench made ghillie brogue made by Loake of England, and sterling silver thistle motif buckles by Inches of Edinburgh. Looking to begin the process in the early fall-will use red laces as well.
