I have been trying to ring them now for over two days and just get an answering service. Wonder if they are still in business

Basically I am looking for a very modern striking black kilt which you can use both to dress up and go clubbing. The Guilty kilt black one looks very good but if they do not pick up the phone.....

What kind of material is the best. Scotsweb does have a variety of black casual kilts but somehow can't make up my mind what to pick. There is a Bespoke Casual Kilt by Manley Richardson in black which looks quite stunning....

You can find their collection on www.guiltykilt.com. They are primarily for the gay market, however their kilts look pretty good

Interesting...maybe my gaydar is busted, but I didn't get "gay market" from their website...alt/goth/punk maybe, and most of those kilts are WAYYY too long for me to wear...but yeah, they're worn well, and if you were to ask me, I'd suggest one of their kilts in a heartbeat vs dressing like the guy I linked in the "Are You Man Enough" thread:

Interesting, that they're too long in general but the way they're being worn doesn't at all suggest 'skirt'. I do wonder, if the guys on the site were to have pulled their kilts up to their natural waists, if the kilts would then appear to be the correct length, fell & fitment issues aside.

IMHO...you have decided what style of fabric you want, and where it will sit on your waist, but consider the length and style of wear as well--since they mention "bespoke", I'm sure they'd be willing to hit a particular spot on your knee, if you weren't keen on the long/sag look.

There is a photo around here somewhere of a guy wearing his kilt sagged, with a matching buckle & cantle, scrunched hose and boots, etc...it works, but only because of what else is being worn with the kilt, and how--the sleeveless undershirt, the rugby shirt, the classic t-shirt, the hoodie, bare skin, these can all work with a sagged kilt and scrunched hose...but start to dress it up, and IMHO a sagged kilt immediately looks either sloppy or skirty, usually the latter, and neither does any of us any credit.

The standard UK black might suit you. If you wanted something more traditional...have you seen the "Black Isle" tartan and similar designs, where there is a sett, but all very dark colors?

Oh well. I been wrong before. I'll admit, it's probably on the fritz because of various other "alternative" kilt manufacturers whose products I've seen, and I'm on a website for kilts talking about clothing with a bunch of dudes...so...the way people worry about the color of their socks around here, I dunno what to tell you. The signal to noise ratio is piss-poor, I think.

So...with that in mind...I gotta ask the gay community...what exactly is the allure of kilts?

Young or old...straight, gay or bi...don't we all just look great in a kilt?!
I think if you want something more modern with a different 'fit', there are surely enough kilt makers who participate and advertise here to create what you're looking for. Give them a call and see what your options are. And remember--you'll look great.

you might wish to search the board for Lady Crystal. She recently made up a VERY modern kilt for a family friend (if I remember correctly), that was not only gorgeous, but expertly made.
