I think some of this stuff is like some of the silliness you see on the fashion runway. I can't see an appropriate occasion for some of these kilts without looking completely out-of-place. (Even as much as I might have personal issues with contemporary kilts, those still have a place in casual wear). The gardener or the tails and whichever others that come down so horribly low below the knees don't seem to belong anywhere. Maybe a club or something?
I don't buy the line that things like this get young men into kilts. Most guys I know would be driven away from the thought if this was an introduction to the kilt.

Not just the hanging of the pleats but the sewing of the fell appears to be on the skewiff.
If it is PVC though it is a bit of a whatsit to shape and I found that the only way to do any curved seam shaping was to cut away all but a tiny allowance and then sew one side onto a bias cut tape with the allowance flat, then fold the other allowance under and sew that on top of the first side, then glue the tape to the back of the PVC.
Not too bad if there are six seams, but for a whole kilt of pleats it would take a long time and could go wrong.

I have been trying to ring them now for over two days and just get an answering service. Wonder if they are still in business
Basically I am looking for a very modern striking black kilt which you can use both to dress up and go clubbing. The Guilty kilt black one looks very good but if they do not pick up the phone.....
What kind of material is the best. Scotsweb does have a variety of black casual kilts but somehow can't make up my mind what to pick. There is a Bespoke Casual Kilt by Manley Richardson in black which looks quite stunning....

You can find their collection on www.guiltykilt.com. They are primarily for the gay market, however their kilts look pretty good

Interesting...maybe my gaydar is busted, but I didn't get "gay market" from their website...alt/goth/punk maybe, and most of those kilts are WAYYY too long for me to wear...but yeah, they're worn well, and if you were to ask me, I'd suggest one of their kilts in a heartbeat vs dressing like the guy I linked in the "Are You Man Enough" thread:
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-enough-60461/
Interesting, that they're too long in general but the way they're being worn doesn't at all suggest 'skirt'. I do wonder, if the guys on the site were to have pulled their kilts up to their natural waists, if the kilts would then appear to be the correct length, fell & fitment issues aside.

IMHO...you have decided what style of fabric you want, and where it will sit on your waist, but consider the length and style of wear as well--since they mention "bespoke", I'm sure they'd be willing to hit a particular spot on your knee, if you weren't keen on the long/sag look.
There is a photo around here somewhere of a guy wearing his kilt sagged, with a matching buckle & cantle, scrunched hose and boots, etc...it works, but only because of what else is being worn with the kilt, and how--the sleeveless undershirt, the rugby shirt, the classic t-shirt, the hoodie, bare skin, these can all work with a sagged kilt and scrunched hose...but start to dress it up, and IMHO a sagged kilt immediately looks either sloppy or skirty, usually the latter, and neither does any of us any credit.

The standard UK black might suit you. If you wanted something more traditional...have you seen the "Black Isle" tartan and similar designs, where there is a sett, but all very dark colors?

Guilty kilts do make some reasonably "normal" kilts as well, but they really are in the market for Fashion clothes, although I'm sure they do sell well to a gay market, but I'm also sure their market is wider than that.
They are difficult to track down, but they do a lot of shows and festivals, I imagine they will be at Brighton Pride this weekend(they usually are).
I'm not convinced that many of the kilts would work for me, I'm probably at least 20 years too old, and don't quite have the skinny figure, but if you like the look go for it, and wear it well!

I would recommend a black Utilikilt original or mocker style.
As fas as Guilty Kilts, I would think that with a slogan of "Bespoke kilts, made for real men (and the men who want them)" they are attempting to attract gay clientele.

Maybe we can hear from someone who's bought one of these and get a hands-on review...thus far, paulhenry seems to be the only person who has seen the goods and commented on the quality.
I don't want to write any kiltmaker off without some first person reviews...you never know, they may make a decent product that fills a niche in the market...don't know until we see one.
Best

Thanks AA, yes I have seen them many many times, and I know of a few members who have bought from them. They really arn't bad for the "trad" ones,(sometimes they pleat to a random element- very tradtional or do I mean historic!) but the more avant guarde ones are the fashion ones or for the clubs scene.I will look for them on Saturday in Brighton.
