I too made the observation that she (and a few others) were in a longer skirt, "stockings", and no sporran. I didn't say anything earlier as I was unsure of how things are done elsewhere.

To the more knowledgeable: Would this be because she (and the others) are not members of a specific band?

My guess is that the ladies are dressed this way because they are ladies. Men wear the kilt; women don't dress up like men and wear men's clothing--they wear skirts.

I think most of the male pipers are wearing just plain old day wear. This isn't a "band" per se, but rather a group of pipers. I believe they are all medal winners in the various piping competitions at the Gathering.

Sandy, thanks for posting the info and the link. It was quite fun to watch. I assume that the younger fellow in the first row of Gentlemen Rankers is the current Duke? The dark glasses and fleeting appearance kept me from a postitive i.d. ...
