Not to mention that all the woolen mills that produce the tartan cloth would be forced to shut down for lack of business...

And where are (were) the majority of those woollen mills? In The Borders (Lowlands!) Wearing 'The Kilt' ceased to be regarded as the exclusive right of Highlanders a long time ago (probably from the time of King George 1V's visit to Endinburgh in 1822). It is now regarded as the National Dress of all Scotsmen (including those 'in exile'). Also, I would imagine that most of the decendants of the old Highlanders either emigrated or migrated south, so most of us probably have some 'Highland' blood coursing through our veins (I know I do). Having said that we must never forget the origins of 'Highland' Dress, and every time we wear the kilt we are paying homage to those proud 'Heilan' men' to whom this special form of dress ment so much.
