This guy's attitude is right out of the 16th-18th centuries, when Highlanders were dimly viewed by Lowlanders as violent, oddly dressed, foreign-speaking, mountain-dwelling barbarians - NOT as fellow countrymen. Strange to note remnants of that prejudice still in existence...!

A previous poster referred to the population mobility of the last few decades. On my last visit to the western Highlands virtually the only accents I heard were those of London and south east England (wealthy incomers) or Dutch and German tourists; very few locals. On top of that many of the younger generation have moved elsewhere for work or career. Demographically the old divisions are, to a great extent, melting away.

I have to answer as someone who was brought up in the Lowlands but whose family are from the highlands for as far back as we can trace.

    Nonsense!
It's an outdated opinion coming from the sort of person who would laugh at anything he considered old fashioned and thus 'backwards.'

No offence to you or your friend, but it's nonsense.

And where are (were) the majority of those woollen mills? In The Borders (Lowlands!) Wearing 'The Kilt' ceased to be regarded as the exclusive right of Highlanders a long time ago (probably from the time of King George 1V's visit to Endinburgh in 1822). It is now regarded as the National Dress of all Scotsmen (including those 'in exile'). Also, I would imagine that most of the decendants of the old Highlanders either emigrated or migrated south, so most of us probably have some 'Highland' blood coursing through our veins (I know I do). Having said that we must never forget the origins of 'Highland' Dress, and every time we wear the kilt we are paying homage to those proud 'Heilan' men' to whom this special form of dress ment so much.

Seriously, it's only an opinion and a rather out-dated one at that. I suspect that it may be due to the proliferation of kilts at football matches, a phenomenon which does not always do credit to Scotland. That said, I personally don't wear the kilt outside of Scotland unless I'm attending a specifically Scottish event.
    LOL, I love it!
