I'm personally a fan of plain marcella front (no pleats, frills), turn down collar, and, in a departure from recommendations, plain front rather than bib front. French cuffs, please.

Whatever shirt you choose, please buy a self-tie bow tie and not a pre-tied thingy.

The shirt is truly a personal preference issue. Many choices, all of which are perfectly acceptable. I am in strong agreement with Artificer on the bow tie…..please buy a self-tie and not a pre-tied. For me, the pre-tied is a fate worse than white kilt hose (or flat caps).

The marcella is an interesting choice, and one that I was not familiar with. I am quickly growing attached to it, and will have to try to find one to see up close.

I would never own a pre-ties or clip-on tie of any kind.
