I've done a couple with magnets (rare earth variety for strength) and they have worked out pretty well. You do have to watch what you get close to, the bumper on my truck likes to grab the kilt pin.
I also found that when using two magnets, a single metal bar that stretches across both magnets will make it sit better than using two separate metal backs.

The other thing you need to watch out for with rare earth magnets is that you don't put any magnetic strip cards (credit, security) near them. Rare earth can wreak havoc with the encoded data.
At my last job, we had magnetic nameplates (because nobody wanted to stick pins in their suits) and every once in a while someone would forget themselves and stick their money clip into their breast pocket. This was always followed by extreme panic, and then sad laughter from everyone else, as the forgetful worried about the possibility of having to get all their cards re-issued away from home.
