History is indeed fascinating and educational when it is conducted within the rules.
It's the nature of many threads that they start off on one subject and end up with heated discussions over something else with religion, politics and provocative personal opinions thrown in.
That can create a cancer that ultimately destroys a thread.

Fair enough, but I was more worried about this happening in other contexts. May I humbly suggest that some trace of a deleted post might be left in place to show that happened?

Sorry for the delay in addressing your concern, it's been a busy night!
If we move a whole thread to the holding cell the software allows us to leave a redirect explaining why. When it's a post or posts that are moved there is no redirect feature and the system shuffles and renumbers the remaining posts.
We try where possible to add a post to explain what has happened, I wasn't the Moderator who dealt with this in this case but when I saw your first comment I responded so that there was then a record.
Be assured, we only move posts for very good reasons. This post proved to be but one of many disruptive posts from the same poster who ended up posting pornographic material and as a result their membership has been revoked. We were getting inundated with complaints about what this poster was doing and have been working hard to get it all dealt with and the problem resolved.
