As a US Navy enlisted man, my issued Pea Coat always fit to about half way down my back side. It was just long enough in the front to cover the bottom buttons on my dress blue pants (bells with button flap). I spent most of my 8 year enlistment in very warm climates and only wore my pea coat on return trips to the states during the winter--my blood had been 'thinned' by the tropics and MAN was I glad to have that coat when I hit a great lakes winter wind.
I'd say use a Navy issue coat because of the standardization of cut--and don't alter it. Great coat--warm, water repellent and can't beat that collar for fighting off a cold wind. I think it looks great as outdoor winter wear with a kilt. But again--this former Petty Officer may just be a tad biased

I started looking for the N2B jackets (I was going to buy one last winter and totally spaced on it) and found this website:
http://www.alphajacketsonline.com/alpha-mens.php
...lots of neat stuff and fair to middling on the prices. Note that the pea coat is the last thing in the list but they have a pea jacket which looks shorter but is nae wool. Anyway, lots of interesting stuff including the replica vintage things...I'm tempted to get one of those for Mrs. Argon since she always wanted one.
Best

Dang, now y'all have got me wanting a pea coat. There's a half-price sale going on at the moment for 100% wool pea coats here: http://www.armynavysuperstores.com/peacoat.htm
I find it interesting that the term (according to the Wikipedia article) has been in use in North America since before The Forty-Five and that it comes originally from a Dutch word for pilot -- back when "pilot" was a nautical term on sailing ships, 'way before air travel.

I was lucky to pick up an issue pea coat some years back. A friend's son was in the Navy, and I gave him the money to buy me one on base. It's my favorite winter coat! My classic Woolrich hunting coat ("Pennsylvania Tuxedo") is a close second:

The latter won't go too well with a kilt, though...!

I've got two, Courtesy of Uncle Sam. One of the fwe benefits of what is known as "broken service", that is, I got out then went back in. Got everything re-issued. Anyhow, they're warm as a toaster and I'd not think about altering mine.
Finding USN issue watch caps is a good thing, too. 100% woll tobaggan/knit cap. They're much warmer than the wool or polyester blends that are on store racks.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

I second that! I have a 100% wool Army issue one from my days as an 11B. I still wear it, though when it gets really frigid I pull out my Russian ushanka

I would not dream of altering my USN peacoat. It is a great garment as is. I would work fine over a kilt. Who cares if it covers the sporran? Unbutton it or wear it unbuttoned to gain easier access to your goods.
