KiltedMariner, I have a "Wallace Collection" Tweed Argyle jacket and waistcoat I got from Scottishkilts.net (tartanweb) for $290 USD a few years ago. I wear it quite a bit, (it's in 95% of any pictures of me in a jacket on here) and I have not really had any 'quality' issues. Like you, I did feel the need reinforce the buttons, but only after I pulled a couple of them loose on the waistcoat, before I had it let out. 
I just looked mine over, and don't see a "made in" label, so it's a mystery where mine may have been made.
