It seems like most would agree that the red/black hose look briliant with a military style kit but look a fool with civilian colthing.
Robertson Hunting looks almost exactly like this tartan, being military i like to stick to what im comfortable with so i pretty much look to the RRoS when laying out my clothes when going kilted (aka lovat green hose and military oxfords or almost military brouges) during the day. i would like to rock the red/black hose but until i get a mess type jacket i have no real need.

Hello,
Call me a purist, but I do not wear diced hose with my Highland day attire. I believe these style of hose are too formal for traditional/contemporary Highland day wear. With a plethora of so many other styles of beautiful and quite smart hose suitable for day wear, one could quickly set aside diced hose solely for evening wear. Hose styles such as solid coloured hose from The House of Cheviot, hose with different designs on the turnover from Almost Unwearoutable, and your basic, "run of the mill" hose from Gaelic Themes or Lochcarron. I believe all of the preceding types of hose are absolutely perfect for day attire. However, with that being said, I do like Matt Newsome's day attire - to include the diced hose colours he chooses to wear, but you will never see me wearing diced hose during the day, and that's just my personal preference.
The only time I would wear diced hose is if I am attending a formal event and I am in Highland evening dress. I believe the same goes for fully-fashioned tartan hose. An obvious exception would be a piper in full military dress, or possibly a reenactor at an appropriate event. For your Mackenzie kilt in the modern colours, I agree with Todd, I would definitely go with red and white diced hose, or tartan hose made in the modern Mackenzie colours - both would look very sharp for evening wear. Good luck mate and thanks for your post.
Kind regards,

There is nothing wrong with red & black diced hose with mufti formal rig, Trey.

Wouldn't it be far more historically, and in that sense traditionally, appropriate to go nuts mixing and matching? Look at the precedence for tartan jackets in totally not matching colours! Either way, matters not much to me as I am very nearly colour blind, makes for a great excuse.
On a related note, as a piper, with a financially irrespoinsible and unrealistic desire to be correct as possible over several periods, I seek the wisdom and insight of those present. My avatar is Modern Boyd, much red and green, with navy blue, livery colours are azure on argent. Suggestions on the best look for diced hose...anyone, please?

I know, red and green would be so obvious and probably look great! I was just worried about looking to much like a overly tall Christmas elf. Maybe I shoud just go with it!
Thanks for your input, very appreciated!

I'd opt for the livery colours (which is what I've done).
Now, for those who are sitting there, scratching their noggin' and asking, "What's a livery colour?"-- and no, it isn't a brownish red-- allow me to explain.
Livery colours are usually derived from the first named metal and colour as they appear in the blazon of a coat of arms. So, if the shield is Argent (silver, usually depicted as the colour white) and the principle charge, in this instance let's say a lion, is Azure (which is blue) then the livery colours would be blue and white.
Wearing diced hose in your livery colours would be an exceptionally sly thing to do. Go for it!

Always a pleasure to have your input sir, it's valued and appreciated. In fact I was going to query you on this very issue. I was going to ask your opinion on the colours as an article of clothing, or pipe banners or ribbons.
Azure on Argent would cetainly be eye popping with modern Boyd
