Cold Steel makes some good knives. I've had a fwe in the past.
The comment about adapting modern material and manufacturing techniques is spot on. The "authentic" makers used every advantage they had to make better and stronger blades. Modern makers are just following tradition.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

Something I always hoped Lynn Thompson would do for a dirk, way before CS came out with the current version, is one with pretty much the blade they have now but with a bit of a false edge; either a single or double fuller (to simulate a reworked backsword blade, though I could live without the fuller happily enough); brass (or steel) pommel cap and brass (or steel) ferrule band at the join of haunches to blade. . .
. . .and a more 1740s-style grip & haunches with a Celtic knotwork pattern, in molded Kraton. Shouldn't cost any more to produce than the current version, might even be less.
I'm thinkin' something with the general look and proportions of the top one in this collection:
"It's all the same to me, war or peace,
I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."

I bought myself the CS Dirk a couple of years ago and it is a nasty piece of work when it comes to the blade, it is wicked sharp! I haven't tried wearing it, but i would agree with Dale Seago the strap is really wimpy!
I also bought the modern sgain dubh that CS makes and it's wicked sharp too! It isn't a period piece but it is a deadly beauty.

I haven't tried that one (yet) so can't comment on it. I do still have one of the "Mini-Culloden" sgians, and really wish they hadn't discontinued it. Takes and holds a wicked edge, and happens to be a good thrower as well.

I thought I'd seen a sgian dubh by Cold Steel, but when I went back to the store they thought I was crazy. I mean in the sense of 'totally mistaken', not in the sense of 'too dangerous to sell a knife to'. I think.

The only current model that CS has now is the Braveheart, which is the model I have. It is a modern version of the sgian dubh.
It is very functional but the sheath is not really for wearing in hose, it has a clip like you would see on a boot knife. It also has a non-slip handle that is more functional and has none of the traditional look that you might want for carry dressed in a kilt.

The clip is removable. They also have the "Scottish Spike" a slightly shorter, more slender version. They are coming out with what looks a lot like a folding sgian with a clip, called the Holdout series but they are on back order. None of these are decorative, they are practical, working knives.
I have several ColdSteel knives including the Braveheart and Scottish Spike. I collect working knives as a hobby, and all the ColdSteel knives are excellent knives.

Damn their eyes! They discontinued the Mini Culloden...I've wanted one for a while...they could do a re-issue...Mini Culloden II. anybody? I looks/looked like a very nice practical sgian.
