I really like the look of that kilt better with the sporran. In my (admittedly narrow) mind, a kilt needs some type of "detail" in the front, in order to look like a kilt. A sporran, or the patterns of snaps or buttons used on many contemporary kilts, something. That second picture looks sharp. That's similar to the way I might wear a contemporary kilt for "nice, but casual" evening wear.
