MacLaren: I'm (almost) an Eagle Scout, and MacLaren has a strong historical connection with the BSA. I have a SportKilt and a SWK Standard in this.
Clergy/Clark: I'm an ordained reader in the Orthodox Church, and I think it looks cool . I have a 16 oz from Frugal Corner in this one.
Buchanan: It goes well with an Aloha shirt of mine. A 13 oz from Frugal Corner.
Saffron: What tenuous claims I have to Celtic ancestry are to Ireland (I'm a quite distant O'Gallaher), and back when I thought that this mattered with regards to which tartans to get, I decided on a wool saffron from SWK.
I also have five yards of plaid flannel that I use as a pseudo-great kilt for ren faires and LARPing.

I've choosen for instance the "weir modern" tartan. This clan has the motto: "vero nihil verius" which means trueth, nothing more than trueth.
So I liked the tartan an the motto fits perfect to me, because I am a police detective and I started playing bag pipe, which should also sound with true tones.
But, mainly I choose the tartan because I liked it.

Now, how did I miss this thread? It must have something to do with being half way around the world...
My current tartan list and why...
Lamont Weathered 1/2 sett heavy weight from SWK - I Like It, do you really need another reason?
Leatherneck Military Box pleat heavy weight from SWK - Many marines in my background. And it is more readily available than the USAF in which I served.
Black Watch Variant heavy weight from SWK - Grants in the background. As well as being a military tartan.
MacKinnon Red 1842 variant 13oz hand sewn tank - Surname tartan. I like this better than the current one for the clan.
MacKinnon Hunting Ancient 16oz hand sewn tank - Same as above. I like the ancient colors.
Isle of Skye, 16 oz Newsome Box Pleat - MacKinnon's on the Isle of Skye. And besides, have you seen the tartan?
Xmark, 16oz, Going to Kathy Lare when I get home - Need you ask?
Future
Robertson Red from USAK, a tartan to be decided as a Newsome Box Pleat (probably a MacKinnon variant in the original Wilson's colors, but maybe a newly designed tartan)

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Currently Have:
BLACK WATCH - it was available "cheap"... more "off-the-rack" than tailored.
On order:
MODERN MACKAY - Matt Newsome made 4 yd box pleat.
I'm a member of Clan Mackay Society, plus I like the history of this tartan. It was first one registered by Chief of Mackay in 1819. Also the colors match descriptions of tartan worn by the Mackay Regt in the 30 Years War.
Wish List:
WEATHERED MACKAY - two reasons: 1) a rarely worn by members of Clan Mackay Society, & 2) it would make a great "hill climber" color.
PERTHSHIRE DISTRICT (MUTED) - the "homeland" of my Scobee's.
GREEN IRISH (SOLID) - for my Irish ancestors, & is the tartan chosen last year by the Clan O'Mórda society on St. Patrick's Day.
RED ULSTER - for my Ulster Scot kin.
MODERN MACKAY - Yes, a second one! One for dress & one for knocking about
Considering:
ANCIENT MACKAY - just because I like the colors!
MACKAY OF STRATHNAVER - an interesting looking tartan that is fast becoming a favorite of Clan Mackay members.
LOCHABER DISTRICT (ANCIENT or WEATHERED) - for my McReynolds kin from the Keppoch region.
There are others I'm considering, but will end my list here (for now)....

MacLachlan by surname.
I like MacLachlan Chief's Blue, Which is Yellow & Carolina Blue, also under consideration, just 'cause I lik'em: Fraser, weathered Maclaren, Ulster, almost anything weathered. I'm not considering Black Watch because everyone else seems to have it, (but I wouldn't pass on a great buy at at garage or flea sale)

Why do you need to contact them? You don't need permission to wear anyone's tartan if that's what you were contacting them for.
