    Hi Sharpdressedscot!
    Thank you for your words.
I want to contact them for a a lot of reason about the feelings I have in Mac Kay country and Mac Kay clan.
I know that there is no "tartan police" and my request it is no necessary, but for my own way of thinking I prefer not to wear the tartan of a family or a Clan without asking permission.

    Thank you!

And you should be commended for such a gesture. It shows respect. Good on ya, as the Aussies say.

Do you know about the Italian and Rome tartans?

    Regards,

    Todd

As has been said time and time again, you don't need permission to wear a particular tartan. But having said that, wouldn't that be a nice collection to start?

Write a nice respectful letter to the clan chief or head, and ask permission. It would cost very little and would make an interesting scrap book. With today's instant access to information, I would think it very easy to obtain the chief's address. Keep a copy of your letter, then place the response in a book, together with a swatch of the tartan. That could turn out to be very nice. I would think that most every chief would respond to the properly worded letter.

I've been kilted for forty years, and in all that time I've never felt the need to wear anything other than one of the MacMillan tartans. The sole exception was when I belonged to a Scottish club in Los Angeles, and all of the officers wore Black Stewart kilts. So, at the present time, I've got two MacMillan Hunting kilts, two MacMillan Ancient kilts, and trews in MacMillan Hunting. My genealogy reads like the aftermath of some ancient Scottish battle-- it is littered with dead McBains, Douglasses, Mackays, McReas, Campbells, MacDonalds, and a whole lot more. I respect each and every one of these ladies who married in to my family, but I am a MacMillan. That's my name, that's my clan, and that's my tartan.

    Cajunscot thank you.
I Know about Italian and rome tartans and we, in Italy, have also the permission to wear the Prince Charles Edward tartan, because of he was born and died in Vatican (in Rome) and before diying decided to give this permission to all italian people for their kindness...
...this last one could be really proud to wear, but when I went to Scotland some years ago and visited Cape Wrath and all the MacKay Country, I felt as if I were at home. I felt much more Scot than Italian.. a strange feeling I've never felt in my travels.
So I decided to wear the kilt and to wear only universal ones or the MacKay. Now I'm wearing Black Watch and we'll see for the future!

James Mac Millan, last week I wrote three email to the President, Vice President and Secretary of the Clan MacKay Association. If I have no answert in few days I'll try to write by "classical mail". LOL!
I have some doubt about the e-mails, because the last news in the website has been written in 2006.... I think it is a problem due to the right communication way!

Thanks to you all guys and excuse me for my bad english!

Just saw this. PM me and I'll see what I can do to help.
From time to time I have contact with the officers of the Scottish society, including Lady Elizabeth (the Chief's sister).

Interesting topic. Just this past weekend I went through the family tree and came up with the following list. We primarily identify with Gordon and Campbell through a maternal 2nd great-grandmother. There may be more, but this is what I could find. The parentheses mean that those branches are included, but are not necessarily the only branch of that family.

    Alexander (of Menstrie)
    Angus
    Baillie
    Balfour
    Barclay
    Bisset
    Borthwick
    Boyd
    Bruce
    Buchanan
    Campbell (Argyll, Lochawe, )
    Cameron
    Chisholm
