Thank you for the 'translation' Magnus. I needed it! I am sorry, but if that was 'Scottish' then it must have been in a local 'Brigadoon' accent - pure fantasy!!

Would you share the URL for that translator? The only dialectizer I've found is the one at www.rinkworks.com , and it doesn't have Scott burr or Irish brogue listed.

There is actually a very nice book (ye can git hit online, wi twa CDs en aw!!) for learnin Scots (the joke translated here appears, by the use of "quine" for "lass", to be in Aiberdonian, or the variant from Aberdeen, which is also what this book is all about) called the Luath Scots Learner, by Colin Wilson. Its nice, cause once you've gotten through it you can read with little trouble the fantastic Scots literary magazine Lallans. The current issue has some very funny stories and a few lovely poems....also a translation of Baudelaire!!
Scots is a lovely language, well worth the effort and unjustly neglected and denegrated as low-class by snobish highbrows and Gaelic enthousiasts....of course the Lowlanders didn't wear kilts, but we can forgive then that can't we? And their language is an interesting relative of Chaucerian English and modern Dutch......

Plattdeutsch ist nicht Norddeutsch. Plattdeutsch ist eine eigenständige Sprache mit verschiendenen Dialekten, Norddeutsch hingegen ein Akzent.
There are things I don't want to understand, as the things with sheep and woman.
Lower German is not Nothern German. Lower German is a language with different dialects, where Northern German is a accent.

Magnus that's funny. You're a hoot mon.
Are you telling us this actually happened?
In the "first person" or is it just a joke you
heard?
Reminds me of the joke about why do Scots shag
their sheep at the edge of a cliff............
(makes 'em push back harder).

This is a true story. It unfolded just as I described.
You going to be at the Gathering in August? Seek me out saturday night, and I guarantee an "interesting" evening.

It's one of the "sticky threads" at the top of the forum index. Two weeks in Vancouver this august. I'm going to be there for three days of the gathering. Forum members are coming in from around the world.
