Sorry to hear about your experience, as well. I've bought heavy weight kilting cloth from this vendor a few times in the past, and the selvedge has always been a very good, true kilting selvedge; and the fabric quality has always been very good to excellent.

I understand that this vendor is selling lengths of cloth left over from other mills closing, and so perhaps there may be some variation in the quality of the cloth. But my experience thus far has been positive.

I've bought from them , too, and the tartan is very high quality. I did just pick a random tartan on his eBay list and took a look at what he's saying now, and, if you scroll down, it _does_ say that the tartan doesn't have a kilting selvedge and will need a hem.

So - here's my two cents. Lots of kilts have hems, and, if it's done well, you'll never notice. Our band Quartermaster called me up the other day and asked if it would be possible to put a hem in one of our band kilts (16 oz), and I said sure. She brought the kilt to me, and I said, oh, it already has a hem in it! She had never noticed that some of our band kilts have hems, and she's been the Quartermaster for 15 years.

Barb - I spotted that one this morning. My gripe is that I specifically asked if it had a kilt selvage and was told it did!

    Follow Up

Seller contacted me today and apologized. He remembered the e-mail asking if it had a kilting selvage but did not check the actual fabric - assumed since he bought it as kilting material it was in fact.

He offered to refund the shipping cost if I would keep the material, so we resolved on that basis. So need to pull out Barb's book and see what I can do to hem the bottom.

I have bought material from that supplier, from the same mill too, and the fabrics are 'hard' and should hem well - it is not such a disaster as it might have beeen if the fabric was a soft weave where the threads can slide out of the seams easily.

I have used soft fabrics before now where the only way to hold the seams was to use glue, so I appreciate an easy to use fabric.

Man, oh man, I wish the Dollar would wake up and reclimb the ladder of power. This $2 per GBP is insane.
I saw some wonderful fabrics on there, but I'm not in a financial position to buy any.
A shame to... I need new kilts as I've dropped several inches off my waist in the last few months. (Don't most peolpe GAIN inches during the winter?)

The dollar stinks against the Pound right now, but, truly, the best it's been since I started kiltmaking is about $1.47. For most of the time in the last 10 years before it started the steep climb, it was around $1.55-1.60. So, when this vendor is selling a kilt length of 16 oz tartan (including shipping) for 93 pounds, it would have cost $144.00 6 or 7 years ago and now costs $186.00. Yes, the prices have gone up, but we were never looking at an equivalent pound and dollar. And this vendor has great prices for tartan even in comparison to wholesale prices from the Scottish mills.

I came across this thread, and I just got a fly plaid in the same tartan as the kilt which I just bought from another member of the forum. I hope they match well!
