Just ordered a Weathered MacKenzie last night. The wife has been waiting for six weeks for those to be in stock as she wanted to buy one for me for my birthday. Well today IS my birthday so it sort of worked out. (though she never got the email notice when they were back in stock)

First of all, let me say that I, like Panache, am an unabashed Stillwater supporter. I think that Jerry's customer service is superb, his shipping times are so fast that it's led to a standing joke about his time machine, and his kilts are the very best that can be had for the price.

That said, the reason he can sell them so inexpensively is that they're made in the East. No, not New Jersey, Pakistan (I believe). Some people have a problem with that; I don't. I know that Jerry is a good guy, and he's paying a fair price to the kilt makers, for the regional conditions.

Secondly, the kilts are machine sewn, and not trimmed in the pleats, the way a traditional Scots-made kilt would be, which does create a bit of bulk about the waist. But it also means that, if you get a wild hare, and decide to recycle the fabric, you can, without too much difficulty.

The fabric itself is very nice. Although the fabric used in the standards is a synthetic, it's worlds nicer than the stuff used by the Gold Brothers. It's comfortable, it's easy to wash, it's happy-making.

The Heavyweights are made of wool. The only heavyweight I have is the Black Watch, which used to be made of a very nice merino wool, but may be made from something else now, so I won't go into depth about it.

The only criticism I have about the stillwater kilts is that the stitching in the fell (the stitched area of the pleats, between the waistband and the hip) has a dismaying tendency to pull loose. I'm told this is actually not uncommon among machine-stitched kilts, so it's not Jerry's fault, and they are inexpensive kilts, so... I fixed it in the two that I experienced it on (a heavyweight and a standard) by taking it to the neighborhood tailor shop and having them redo the seams that had pulled loose.

The time machine thing is true. I ordered a Black Watch from Jerry on a Friday night....it arrived Monday morning. He is in Minnesota, I'm in Florida. That shipping time is INSANE!

Anyways, I have one complaint about SW...they don't have the Galbraith tartan, and that makes me a sad haggis. That's it. Everything else about them is perfect. ;)

Now, if Jerry begins carrying kilts in the Galbraith Tartan, I can swear there would be two immediate orders placed. ;) Flashes too.

I think your best bet for a reasonable Galbraith Kilt is going to be Rocky.

I got swatch for the Galbraith Modern and though the blue is very dark in it, it is handsome. I'm saving my pennies and hope to order a semi trad by the beginning of summer.

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing actually. But the cost difference is immense. I guess I simply must start saving.
