Never heard that one, and it did not come up in any research I have done on the tartan. It's an old Wilsons of Bannockburn tartan. In their 1819 pattern book, they say the tartan was named for "the city of Aberdeen." The earliest record of it is from an order they filled for it in 1794, however their notes indicate they believe the tartan to have been designed by them sometime prior to the repeal of Proscription.

My fathers side of the family originally came from a small town in Aberdeenshire. This got me thinking, since my family name is a lowland one, Watt, maybe my next kilt should be a district tartan that has a real connection with my family heritage. Upon doing some research I do not see any mill that makes the Aberdeen tartan in 16oz heavy weight. This got me to thinking, do locals in the Aberdeen area never get kilts in this tartan? I was just curious if it is very uncommon in Scotland to get a kilt made from a district tartan. I know most of us here on XMTS do not reside in Aberdeenshire let alone Scotland but I welcome any and all to respond with comments on the matter.
I saw this on ebay it might be of interest to you. Plus I am a fan.

Depending on what part of Aberdeenshire you have an association with there are also the Garioch, Buchan or Gordon Tartans.

And, to add to John's post, the Buchan District Tartan is also the Cumming Hunting tartan, since Buchan was traditionally Cumming lands.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has replied to the post. I new there would be a wealth of helpful information here. I think when I get back stateside I will be contacting Matt about ordering a box pleated kilt in this tartan. Still have a little more time to mull it all over, but I am pretty sure this is the route I want to go.

You won't regret it. I personally love to see district tartans being worn, be they for American states, Canadian provinces, Scottish districts, etc. I myself wear a "district tartan" for the State of Iowa, where my Scottish ancestors settled after immigrating to the US, and where my mother was born.
Be sure to visit Matt's web site: www.district-tartans.com.

You may want to think about ordering tartan sooner rather than later. The UK pound is down to US $1.64. Or you might want to wait and see if it drops further.
