Hi English Bloke,
The Scotweb Store has a new and pretty cool setup for this. They have a new online software tool for designing tartan (which I used to create this one) and then they will custom weave the cloth and produce many of their products from it as well. There is a minimum 10 yard order for custom woven cloth. So for example, you could order an 8 yard kilt and then buy 2 yards of material, or perhaps a necktie and a scarf or two. The prices appear to average about 25% higher than for "off the shelf" tartans.
As members of XMTS we also have a standing 10% discount by clicking the ad at the top of these pages. A nice thing! I will of course follow up with a full review once I've actually had this tartan produced.
The other question is whether one wants to register the tartan with the Scottish Tartans Authority. That is a separate process. I am going to do that with this one, and will review that here as well.
Cheers,
Philip

Morgan,
As a past yachtsman of the Chesapeake Bay I think the tartan colors are divine and anyone would be honored to wear such a grand looking tartan. What a great job and a fantastic way to honor your father.

Thank you Chris. Our family once had a home right on Chesapeake Bay -- lost in the Great Depression. It is still one of my favorite bodies of water, and although Dungeness crabs are bigger, you just can't beat the flavor of an Atlantic Blue.
Cheers,

That's a beautiful tartan design. The anciant/weathered colors are perfect together.

The base looks nice and simple - like the Campbell Ancient and a couple of hours. I like the added blue and red. Overall a very nice tartan. I'd "go fir it!"
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

So be it. It will certainly be an honour toward him, it is a very nice looking tartan indeed. Wear it with pride!

I too like the overall color scheme of your tartan, but feel it lacks something----bold. Most tartans, other then those based on the black watch, generally have something about them that is a bit bolder than the rest----a yellow or white accent stripe, 4 sequential red stripes, etc...
I am wondering if widening up the red and blue strips just a bit, and maybe the whitish field on which they center, might change the feel enough to bring some boldness into the design. just a thought.
Good luck with it.

Lovely looking Tartan, that would be a very nice tribute to have for the man.
What about a blue Stripe for Scotland...?

I think you've done an excellent job creating this tartan, and what a fantastic way to honor your dad!
I personally love the muted and ancient look of this - I would leave it alone! Others have suggested that you make something bold in it - if you do, I would make the blue stripe OR the red stripe richer. (Again, just a personal opinion! ) Sometimes when you start trying to tweak something, you lose what you were going for! I quilt and this is something I always have to be careful with - STOP when it looks right!
