Most of the tartan kilts I've made have under-apron pockets. I haven't tried slit pockets yet, but that's coming.
I like the cargo pockets on my RKilt, but they can get in the way occasionally.

I put cargo pockets on all two of the x-kilts I've made for myself. I used to wear cargo shorts all summer anyway, so I love the cargo pockets on my kilts (I hate having my wallet in the back pocket of my p@nt$.) I think that with solid color kilts that the cargo pockets make them look less like skirts to the general public, too.

Pockets for daily, sporrans for dressing

As a daily Utilikilt wearer, I consider pockets mandatory and a sporran part of 'tartan' dress (fancy or not).
The placement of the cargo pockets on my UK Survivor is kind of addictive, as my phone, wallet, knife, flashlight, whatever are accessible without effort.
The engineering of said pockets is brilliant for cargo (we watch a LOT of parades in New Orleans, and sixteen beers in pockets is worth four bought!).
I have two sporrans and a Nightwalker on order, but more days than not, I'm wearing a kilt with slash pockets, sometimes slash & cargo.
Frankly, the idea of a tartan kilt with pockets is unappealing, sort of like a khaki tuxedo or sneakers and a leather jacket.

I have 2 contemporary kilts- one Amerikilt and one Flamingo Kilt- and I never use the pocket on the AK. It's uncomfortable to have things on my butt, and I don't like the way cargo pockets look on kilts. So for me- I'll pass.

Freedom kilts do make tartan kilts with front slash pockets that are pretty much hidden. Admittedly I've not seen one of his tartan kilts but in my canvas FK the front pockets are hidden in the pleats. I really have no use for my cargo pockets on my FK, to be honest they are there more for rugged decoration than function. I'd just hate to stuff bulky items in there and have them look like saddlebags or my wife's ever-expanding hips (yes, I went there people!). As innovative as the front slash pockets on my Freedom Kilt is also the back double welt pockets as opposed to the rear cargo pocket. All that is seen on the pleats are two pocket flaps but a lot of bulky items (eg. a wallet before a kilt purchase) as the pocket falls at the bottom curve of the buttocks which allows the pleats to still fall virtually straight down from your hip measurement. This also allows some movement of that wallet when seated, how many men suffer physical detriment from sitting on a wallet in jeans?

Freedom Kilts are in my opinion the epitomy of kilt pocket design. Proper placement and intelligent design.

I like the slit pockets on my UK Mocker. They are deep enough that even my wallet does not make a bulge. Some folks complain that they are too deep.

I also like the cargo pockets on my Compass model Alphakilt . They are removable using the MOLLE/PALS webbing system - so I can easily convert the kilt to make it sporran ready.

I did go one further with my sporran being MOLLE on my RKilt. I think MOLLE and pockets on a contemporary kilt are very complimentary of each other. I would really like to see more exploration of this system with kilts. For those unfamiliar with this system.

I have two UKs. One has cargo pockets and one slit pockets. I much prefer the slit pockets. The cargo pockets are too bulky for me. They look and feel like an add on.

I do like my sporrans - with tartan kilts - and I con't bring much with me, a small wallet, some change, my mobile phone and a key for the car and the house. Nevertheless, I could often use just a few cubic centimeter's more space. Therefore I'm for one or two small slit pockets on tartan kilts.
On my Utilikilts I'm fine with the cargo pockets, even if my arms are not quite long enough.

    Depends on where you’ll be.
I wear contemporary kilts at (camping) music festivals.
My small items can be carried in a two-pocket shirt or at most a sporran or waist pack.
I have several AmeriKilt’s (back pocket) and SportKilts (apron pocket) and have rarely used the pockets.
