Kilt or No Kilt?

I heard this on the CBC news this morning as well. I'm going to make a suggestion. Tell him to show up kilted anyway. As long as he is dressed in a manner that shows respect to his heritage and the people attending, the School Board won't have a leg to stand on. Any organization in this country who has a dress code still have to follow the rules set out by the Human Rights Commissioner for each Province. And they in turn follow the Federal guidelines. Dress codes cannot override any dress defined by Race, Religion, ect. unless safety is an issue.
What really, really p*****s me off is the fact that my father served for 6 years during WWII (along with 7 Uncles) to ensure equality and fairness for all citizens. I served for 20, my daughter served for 6, my nephew has been in for 5 and will be staying for 25. And then you have this group of people on the board, who were likely politically appointed, making a decision based on the actions of one idiot.
So, I would tell the lad to let the School know in advance that he will be wearing his kilt, and if there are repercussions, they will be hearing from the Alberta Human Rights Commissioner. Because, as a Canadian citizen, he has that right.
And if possible, could you post the email address of the Board, or the school's Principle. I the members of the form had one of those, we could certainly make our views known.
And that's my rant for the week.

My son wore his Hunting Walace Kilt to his Junior High graduation and the the only coment we heard was from his friends mother that "she loved a man in a kilt". Of course then when he was in High School he'd wear periodically it during the school year and found it to be a great advantage in getting girls phone numbers.

In Denmark everyone is free to wear what he or she wants, unless a uniform is proscribed (police, army, hospital doctors and nurses, postmen etc.). In very, very few companies a dress code exists - even if it might be advisable to some degree to follow company "norms and culture".
Business suits have become seldom except for lawyers and accountants.

In ordinary schools, high schools and universities certainly no dress codes imply and not at any occasions.

We dress casual.

Sounds like a magical world, Greg. Now, if Denmark were just a bit more tropically located I'd be filing papers for immigration right now.

On topic, in the US, at least, it has been ruled that student's DON'T have exactly the same rights (property searches, free speech) in the school setting.

This seems particularly silly though. It's not like he's planning on donning a kilt and a tuxedo t-shirt and showing everyone he's "regimental" (which would be my guess as to what happen the prior year).

He might (should he press the issue and show up 'dressed') wish to forgo the sgian dubh (or at least go for a 'safety' version). I could see them, having lost the battle, to try and catch him on 'carrying a weapon to a school function' even though it is an article in the tradition dress.

And we pay taxes and taxes and taxes. On cars the tax is 180% plus - of course - VAT 25%.

The trees do not grow up to the sky.

Therefore we must have some freedom regarding the way we dress.
