Kilted in airports

Steve Ashton recently suggested twisting the kilt 90 degrees before stepping through the detector. With the buckles fore and aft the amount of metal passing through the portal at any instant is minimized. Seemed to work when I tried it.

I tried this too and so far it has worked perfectly.

Well here's a crazy idea....Maybe you shouldn't wear a kilt while flying?? I mean it's great that you like wearing a kilt and all. God knows I love my kilts too. But I feel there is a time to and a place for everything. I'm pretty sure when that poor under payed airport security guy see's you coming his thinking.. "Oh for goodness sake!! can't this day be over?" Why make your life more complicated then it needs to be??

Sorry, but I think that this is just defeatist. Should women who need the support of an under-wired bra give up flying as well? Should all the XMarkers, who own no trousers and wear the kilt everyday, give up flying - or should they walk round naked instead?

Clothing evolves all the time. We can all remember when all zippers were metal. Now, the overwhelming vast majority are a non-metallic material. The same could happen with buckles and we could get them in a variety of colours - to match the kilt.

I appreciate that not all of us come from the 'land of the free', but if we start giving up personal freedoms, in the end we have no freedoms left.

The other thing is that some things are just worth the effort.

This reminds me of visiting some fairly remote airports in Eastern Europe when travelling with the 'Tartan Army' following the national football team.
The bewilderment on the faces of the security staff, both male and female were priceless. obviously they had never seen or frisked a man in what they believed was a 'skirt'
But that was when we used to have a good team

I've always wanted to travel in a kilt, but I cannot get through an airport without being harassed, or sometimes even followed.

My favorite kilts to wear flying are my USA Kilts Casuals with no kilt pin or belt. No metal on them. Never a problem. Lightweight and comfy for flying.

Absolutely! I wear a sporran on a sporran strap. The whole thing goes on the xray belt, I dance through the metal detector and strap it back on. Faster and easier than taking the stuff out of pants pockets. And Rocky's Casuals will still look good after a long flight. The only way to go for air travel.

turning the kilt sideways seems to work! just as well as before I knew this trick I had a nosey security man at LA airport grope me he certainly found out what I do not wear under the kilt !!
