Welcome from Albany, NY!
I won't give you advice on which tartan to choose as I think it's a personal choice and almost any tartan can look good when worn with style. I would, however, recommend 16oz. weight for your first kilt.

Will I notice a difference in quality between the mills? and will it be worth my while paying the extra for the 16oz, will it hang better etc? My instinct is to pay the extra for the heavier weight as I’m hoping this will last a lifetime........ or at least what’s left of it.
Hi,
There isn't much difference in quality between the two mills. There has been a recent discussion on the types of selvedge both use here:
http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/d...757/index.html
but both mills produce excellent quality cloth, and should be around the same price for standard tartans (old and rare, select etc increase the cost).
I'd also recommend spending the extra on a 16oz kilt for all the reasons already mentioned.

Happy Birthday, and welcome to the forum. You have received sound advice. I couldn't add anything new, however, I would like to emphasize that whatever tartan you choose, go with the 16oz single width strome.

If you're in Aberdeen, I'd recommend you have a look at Alex Scott at the corner of Schoolhill and Back Wynd. The kilt department is on the top floor of the building, and the kilts are made on the premises by a skilled kiltmaker named Margot Brodie - well worth a visit and an excellent quality product. My own first kilt was from them.
best regards

I know the Alex Scott shop well and have rented from them a few times in the past. They would have been my first choice...... if I had a choice, but as it was a pre-bought gift then I don't. The voucher I got is for "Gibbs Sirs" of Inverurie, I've been out there for a look and it looks good to me so everything should be fine.

Best wishes, and when it does arrive, be sure to post a picture.
