The short answer from the FAQ section is: "A 'TANK' is defined as an eight-yard, wool, hand-sewn, traditional kilt. ie., "It's built like a tank." (coined by Jimmy Carbomb c.2005)"
Many consider it the best money can buy in terms of quality and durability.

This might be opening a whole other can of worms, but from looking at the website of the scottish tartans museum, it sounds like the 4 yard kilt is the older style, thus, more "traditional". Why then would the 8 yarder be considered the traditional kilt?

It would be considered the traditional modern style of kilt, because it's pretty much been the only widely worn style of civilian kilt in the last 100-110 years.
If you're looking for the "original tailored kilt", that would be the four yard box pleated affair (which is what I prefer).

Hey Lyrd....gotta warn you...I ordered up one of Kathy Lare's kilts and after getting it found that, in short order, I now own nine with one more on order....craftsmanship is soooo addictive.
Really curious to see how Barb's kilts and Kathy's kilts compare... imagine there are some difference in techniques, a couple of great ladies though.
Happy for you to have the financial resources to go for the best.

Tomorrow should be the day..ohh happy happy joy joy. Heheh Can't wait to place the order for a Mackenzie weathered tank from Kathy. Just have to decide which tartan i want Barb to do. Maybe the hunting green or the ancient. Thinking the hunting green in a 13oz for days when it gets 100 degrees with 90 % humidity. Geesh, 4 kilts in one month, 2 hand sewn. Is there a inoculation for this?
