I don't often wear black or white, but black is occasionally appropriate with my clergy tartan tank, clerical shirt, black barathea Argyle, etc., but that's both colour complimentary and occupationally appropriate.

I think i must be an old geezer, and have a distinct preference for black hose and wear them more than any other colour. I also like lovat green/lovat blue with my ancient Ramsay and Gordon kilts and beige for Weathered Gordon.
I had more or less stopped wearing the off white hose I wore for 20 years or more, influenced by what I read here mainly, but to me they still look best with a Prince Charlie and black tie and will stick to them for formal events. I appreciate that elaborate and expensive patterned/diced hose appeal to many people, but not to me. I would not feel confident scrunched and always wear flashes and garters.
I think the kilt is a powerful sartorial statement and generally it doesn't need anything to compete with.

It won't be long now before everyone is saying black hose make you look like you're in a pipe band, so both seem to me to be a losing proposition.

Im the only person I know of in the Cowichan Valley doin the kiltie thing.
Black or White? On a color chart white is a absence of color, & black is all color. Knowing that you can wear any color with white, Black or grey (a shade of black).
I dont own either, but I can see myself getting black, charcoal &/or grey since I have 3 kilts that have black in them.

I have a range from near white to black socks and many colours in between. Reasonable quality socks can be got cheaply on the net in a multitude of colours. I thus have a fair choice and I match them with the rest of what I wear, blue polo shirt = blue socks, cream top = cream socks etc. I tend to see what is in my drawer and choose accordingly! Formal I wear heavier off white socks, tops worn depend on formality, no coat is casual, grey Argyle better dress, black Argyle formal, they are adequate. Socks can be chosen tend to match either kilts or tops, but the important thing is not to look weird or extreme. I wear dark blue or black socks a lot as I have lots of dark tops! It is fun as almost anything goes with a kilt so if not extreme, go for it and don't fret.

Personal choice and to my way of thinking a little like the colour of a tie worn with a shirt...... white and black can look great, so can a range of colours. I was once told by a very helpful assistant when looking at suits, shirts and ties for work that when in doubt contrasts are good, trying to match too much sometimes ends up actually looking worse..... however being a bit colour blind I remain happily impervious to many of the colour 'clashes' people describe...
One thing I can say about white from experience is its best not to wear to a highland games when its just been raining unless you are happy with the brown speckled look....its amazing how much more shows up on white hose!

As far as the Pipe Band thing goes, from the late 1980s up to around five years ago it was common for every single band in the Grade One Finals at the World Pipe Band Championships to wear the stark white hose. (One year one of the bands wore offwhite/cream hose and they really stuck out as looking dingy and unsmart.)
Last year only two of the 14 bands wore white hose. 9 of the 14 wore black (or possibly an extremely dark charcoal grey; I was watching live online and it's often hard to distinguish between the two).
One mid-grey, one Lovat Blue. Shotts had odd hose with contrasting tops, rare in the Pipe Band scene.
I mention Grade One at The Worlds because it's those bands that set the fashion trend for the rest of the world's competition bands. Everyone who really wants to win wants to look like "the big boys".
Anyhow, here's the best place for black and white hose

I don't care for either! I prefer coloured hose, or even charcoal grey, over black or white.
