    NY State Tartan

    Hi, Brian!

In terms of design elements, my ideas would be: a dark green base for the forests and mountains (maybe with brown added somehow), blue bands for the all of our lakes (Great, Finger, George and Champlain), gray lines for our famous cities. Something along those lines, eh?

I have an aquaintance with my local state senator and when the time comes could run the idea by him, and my local assemblyman as well.

Other New Yorkers can weigh in here on design ideas, and I'm sure we could get other state legislators involved as well.

But, since you have tartan design experience, Brian, why don't you run with this and and let us see what you come up with...!

The biggest difficulty, I think, would be getting someone in Albany to be interested enough in a state tartan to push some legislation through approving a design and then getting the Governor to sign it. I could design a New York tartan (any ideas, Brian?) but it means nothing if it doesn't have official sanction.

Is there a national tartan for the whole US? Something in red white and blue might be appropriate and the kilt could be worn with 12 stars on the front edge of the apron in the way that the Royal Irish have shamrocks or others have rosettes.
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

There is probably more than one but D.C. Dalgliesh sells the US Bicentennial tartan.

The Connecticut state tartan is not as bad as it originally sounded, but back when I was active with the Saint Andrew's Society of CT I remember we sent a letter asking the legislature not to approve it. Something about the fact that it was not designed with any historical conventions in mind but in an effort to make nice curtains for one fof the UCONN buildings.

I think the colors are pretty much the colors of the state flag. The closest we have to any officially kilted state unit is the State Police Pipe band, and they do not wear the state tartan, as far as I know. My brother who is a retired state trooper borrowed my kilt to wear at a couple of banquets with his uniform. I have never seen a kilt in the state tartan.

I see a lot of beautiful State tartans on this thread. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of the Texas bluebonnet tartan, and do not own such a kilt in that design.

    Here's the Connecticut state tartan. I think it'd make a fine kilt...someday.

    Tennessee State Tartan

Not bad but I'm not sure I'd want a kilt in it... I will say these colors look alot better than our college football team's color which can be found.... well, EVERYWHERE.... Bright, neon, construction orange.... blech... haha (No offense, Vols fans!)
