If you're going to wear the Leatherneck tartan, try off-white hose, and a polo shirt with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor.. Semper Fi!

They come in alot of different colors too.
    I prefer banded/collarless (1880's style) or Celtic Croft's Rustic Kilt Shirt w/ 3/4 sleeves.
For a somewhat dressier look with my US Army tartan, I wear an off-white/natural polo. I'm not a dressy guy.
This almost perfectly states my opinion. I own the Celtic Croft shirt discussed. It is slated for Ren-Faire use only.

With my Army tartan I wear a matching polo style shirt or an outdoors/military (Think Cabelas or Gander Mountain, Guide Series)style button down shirt, and in the winter a decent sweater sees me through.

BARF! (just kidding I have a Jacobite shirt but am not to fond of it sometimes)
If you want a traditional shirt get a leine with a button at the collar. The reenacting groups know were to get them.

I saw a bunch of guys this weekend in Jacobite shirts, kilt, and sandals and it's reaffirmed that it's just not a look I would envision for myself. It looks too much like the cover of a cheesy romance novel.

In a casual context, I never wear anything with a kilt that I wouldn't wear with a pair of jeans.

    LOL! That's a stretch, IMHO.

I have a Jacobite shirt that was made especially for me, but I couldn't stand the laces. I simply replaced the laces with bone toggle buttons {two peg-shaped buttons connected by heavy thread).

That said, I don't wear it much, even though it's cotton and breathes well. The temperatures at most kilted events here require no more than a light tee or polo.
