    Can We?

    Greetings all,

Can we be better at getting the message out of kilt wearing?

Be a little free form on your thoughts.

Kilts make it easy to moon politicians. After all, you can run faster with your kilt up than with your pants down.

I kinda like Raphael's idea of suckering the Government into subsidizing a Kiltmaking company.

It is a better use for our tax money than many government boondoggles we could all name.

Glen, I often think about this.

We are up against a few obstacles, a society that is in the most part antagonistic about kilts. Some just see them as skirts, others think they only have a place in pipe bands, others just regard me as a sex object

I try to promote a complete "celtic package", with kilts being one part of an overall interest in promoting celtic-ness. I include celtic music, events, culture, language, customs etc.

For me it's in integral thing, and kilts fit very nicely into that.

I see music as a wonderful draw-card, it gets people in.

Well "the message" is probably going to be different for each of us.

I don't have grand visions of most men running around in kilts.

But it would be nice to be able to go out and be sure that my choice in garb isn't going to get me heckled, or put out of a job.

So my "message" is more like "the kilt is a normal garment for a man to wear just like a pair of pants". And to get that message out, I think we need to appeal to all those weekend wallaces out there to wear their kilts in regular rotation with their other casual clothes for handling their normal day to day affairs. Those guys already have their kilts, and just need to be encouraged to wear them at more than just the "safe" places.

Having been to a couple of events where all of the kilts come out of the woodwork, I have to think that if just the weekend wallaces alone would wear their kilts a bit more often it would be enough to get everyone else used to the idea of seeing a fellow in a kilt and then it won't be so much of a novelty.

    DING!!! DING!!!

    You and me BOTH, brother!

You try to jam the kilt-wearing down someone's throat, and thry'll just find reasons why NOT to wear them.

You educate them in the ways of the Celtic traditions, the modern trends, the music, the crafts, and everything else that makes it unique... and they'll find their own ways to live it. That may include kilts. The number of kilts that we get at our gigs BECAUSE we wear them is proof enough. When there's an internal reason and a "comfort" in wearing them... they'll be worn. The more you become comfortable with it... the more they're worn.

I actually have people in my neighborhood wearing them around for casual day-wear now.

I get out the message about kilt wearing every day: I wear my kilt. The more people who see me notice that kilts are for wearing about normally. Many people give me great comments, or mention that they have a kilt at home. My response is, "Well you should wear it!" Other people tell me they have friends with kilts. I say, "I'd like to meet them!" At the bar people tell me about their kilted friends. "Well bring them in!" The more people see me, and others, wearing kilts, the more they'll be accepted. People in the neighbourhood see me every day, wearing a variety of kilts. They smile and wave and think nothing of it. The next time any of these people see anyone in a kilt, they'll tell them about this other guy (me) they know who wears a kilt. If they see three other people in kilts, they'll stop mentioning it because it's getting so "normal."

I agree with Magnus. I've seen a couple random kilters walking around, but never too frequently. And I hear all the time "OH! YOU'RE WEARING A KILT! SEAN CONNERY/ROBBIE WILLIAMS/EWAN MACGREGGOR/THAT GUY FROM THAt PLACE WITH THE THING! WEARS ONE! AHHHHH! (Faints Beatlemania style)" :P

Ok, so that bit about the fainting is a bit of an exaggeration. but I have heard all of those when I wear the kilt. Then I say "well, while i love being considered a celeb in my lil world, really, it's mroe than a statement. These are just my normal clothes

I think casual example is the best way. I wore my black mocker out to a club in downtown Huntington Beach last night and didn't get any bad comments. People recognized it as a kilt, and while I did get some sideways looks, I also got some high fives (from the more enibriated guys) and some compliments from girls.

I liked the band enough to go back on a regular basis (They're the regular Sat. night band), so I'll make a point of wearing a different kilt each time.

Traditional kilts obviously have a solid celtic foundation. They will surely endure beyond our days. But there are many non-celt folks that will stay away from them because of their ethnicity. They see kilts in the same terms as you and I might view the fustinella. In short, the ethnicity associated with kilts (its importance to you and I notwithstanding) is baggage.
