Finally dispensing with daks at dinners downunder
Hello fellow Kilted Celts, and like-minded cousins,
I am 44 and after wistfully looking on at the kilted lads getting all the ladies attention at functions and promising myself a kilt every New Year and Burns Night that 'one day' I'd get a kilt, i have finally been and gone and measured for it.
ALD Kiltmakers in Clydebank (Scotland) are outfitting me, and it has started me off looking for places where I can wear my kilt in like-minded company besides the obvious big days in the year, and also on a quest for sporrans, kilt hose, and the like, it has been an absorbing pastime, and to think I started out and just wanted to get one as an ice-breaker on NYE!
As I'm lucky enough to travel a lot I had to consider things like getting a 'dummy' sgian dhu (and even then- with a flat point!) to get thru airport checks, and if a visit to USA is in order (as it certainly will be) I probably can't get past the quarantine guys with a seal or musquash sporran, so have been looking at horse, pony (nice!) and cow alternates.
I chose an 'Oban' (dark) green Argyll jacket with gauntlet cuffs and black twill epaulettes (for a touch of formality and originality) Antique metal buttons & belt and a great semi dress sporran of black cowhide (fur front) with no tassels but a distinctive 'braveheart' looking lock-pin & chain on the front flap.
My kilt is a dark 'cherry' MacGregor tartan with a nice white pipe in it.
As there was a kilt already made in this material at my fitting I got a great preview of how it will actually look with the Argyll!
Wa-hae!
Pix as soon as I get all together in it a month or so...
I know 'fashion' dictates pipers usually wear Glengarries, but I really want one for daywear and to put my MacGregor clan badge in it, it just finishes off the whole look.
cheers, Will.
