And another newb question
Along with my kilt I'm looking at purchasing the standard accessories - belt, buckle, pin, plaid brooch, sgian dubhs, sporran. My question is - all these are available with a clan crest on them. I want at least one of the items design to be in my crest, but is it over the top for all of them to be? If it's only going to be 1 or 2 of them .. which should it be? This is for my wedding and very formal ..

It may too much with all of them, but that's a personal decision. I would maybe go with the sgian dubh and the buckle if anything.

It's going to be pricey, but you should be able to get your clan crest (if it's a popular crest) on almost anything. I have to agree with Colin, that if all your accessories have your clan crest on it, it may be abit much. But the choice is yours.

That's kind of what I figured. I think probably just the sgian dubh will do the trick.

In my opinion you really want to watch having too much of the same tartan and too many matching clan (or other symbols) symbols in your outfit.
Imagine that I put on my Galbraith tartan kilt, and wear it with Galbraith tartan flashes, a Galbraith tartan fly plaid, a Galbraith tartan tie and my Galbraith tartan cap. Now to finish off the outfit I wear my Galbraith clan emblem kilt pin, my Galbraith clan emblem sporran, my Galbraith clan emblem sgain dubh, my Galbraith clan emblem tie tack, and just for that extra bit o' bling I wear a silver clan Galbraith emblem ring. I would cease to be just a kilt wearer, I would have become... GALBRAITH MAN!*
Too much matching stuff, be it a Clan Badge, a tartan, or a motif (such as Thistle, Dragon, or Shamrock), etc...takes the kilt from being clothing to being a costume. This is sometimes refered to on X Marks as "Brigadoonery"
If you want a clan badge kilt pin, or a sporran, or a hat badge, whatever..go for it, but no more than two items per outfit.
Cheers

Personally, I would limit myself to the sporran and kilt pin. Just a touch of the ornate to the outfit.

Brother #2's girlfriend likes to call me Kiltman. And I don't even have to be wearing tartan.
Brother #1 thought this was funny, until I started calling him my "sidekick," Sporran Boy.
Hijack over, back to our regular thread.

Going with everything clan crested reduces your chance to individualise and personalise your outfit. The only common theme in the outfit I am building is silver/nickel.
Another thing I read that puts me off wearing clan emblems is that wearing the clan crest you are swearing allegiance to the chief, something that doesn't sit too comfortably with me.

I will suggest not the plaid brooch, since you will need to be very formally dressed to use it. And if you are like me, that is a rarity.

How much is too much is a personal choice; look at the uniform of the Gordon's or Seaforth's and count all the deer heads, or harps on a piper from the Royal Irish Rangers; a common theme is pretty traditional. I would point out that most people will only see the top 2" or so of a skian dubh, and if they see your kilt pin up close...well, I hope that they're a very good friend. A clan badge on your belt buckle and your bonnet will get the most use at Highland games and whatnot.
