    Canvas interfacing for kilts

    Hi folks

I just ordered a bunch of different kinds of canvas interfacing to test out for recommendations for the 2nd edition of my book.

Do any of you have sources for woven canvas interfacing that you particularly like and that have web pages that make them readily accessible? If so, could you post a reply in this thread with the URLs and details on the name/description of the canvas so that I can check them out?

    Thanks!

    Barb

My favorite place for reenactment-type fabrics is 96 District Storehouse in Abbeville, SC. I buy just about ALL my non-worsted wool there. The sell only "period correct" fabrics, so their wools, cottons, linens, andso forth are all 100%, no poly blends. If a reenactor gets drunk and falls in a campfire, they don't want his clothes to melt to him.
Back to topic, they usually carry SOME type of "real" horse hair canvas, though it varies somewhat by what they get a good deal on. Right now, they have 72" wide stuff for $6/yard (normally would be $20-30/yard, but they got a GREAT deal and are passing it on to the customer.
    Their info:

    111 Trinity St.
    Abbeville, SC 29620
    864-366-9600
    sales@96districtstorehouse.com

As their website has been under contruction for a year now, as they work/hawk wares at historic gatherings, reenactments, and so forth. I'd call or email about what they have.

(Side note, they have some material that is 13-16 oz (or so) 100% wool in Wallace tartan (6.25" from yellow stripe to yellow stripe). On side is "fuzzy" while the other "feels" like worsted. Its $12/yard. I bought 4 to try some stuff. Just for the info. No formal conection, only a very happy customer of 11 years and 2 business names-long story.)

Hmmm - this is actually the wrong kind of canvas. I'm not dumping on you, just making sure that I clarify what I mean by "canvas". The kind of canvas interfacing used in kilts isn't the kind that you'd sew anything out of. It's an odd mix of (typically) polyester, hair (goat or horse), wool, and cotton. It's stiff and pretty ugly, actually!

    Cheers,

    Barb

I just bought a yard at Britex Fabrics in Union Square, San Francisco. I asked for hair canvas and they showed me tailor's canvas. It was expensive at $10.95/yd, but everything is at that store. I bought it for the Kilt Kamp kilt, so I'll let you be the judge of whether it was the right kind or not.
