    How do I say it?

I don't know if this should be posted here or in the heraldry and tartans section, perhaps, but - I've recently discovered my Mom's family (Bowman) is apparently a sept of the Farquharson clan. My question: How is that pronounced? Thanks for the help, y'all.

agree with Beloit's second pronunciation above. Around here people say it fast, with the stress on the very first syllable.

I'm with Cloves. Sometimes the qu will be vocalised, so you hear Fahrgus'n.

Based on my experience with the odd "q" words in Scots Gaelic, I'm gonna throw my vote with "FAR ku sun," with many variations I'm sure... As an example may I put forward two prominent q words from MacGregor history: "Balquhidder" and "Colquhon". I've heard native folk say the former "BO FIDer" and "BAL kwidder," and the latter almost unanimously as "KUh HOON" (which I would say has turned to Calhoun here in the States). Not exactly sterling examples, but it's the best I could do at this hour... actually I dont think they support my hypothesis at all, but I'm still gonna go with "FAR ku sun".

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

As the Vice President of Clan Farquharson (UK) I can tell you that the Clan Chief pronounces it "Far-ka-son". I hope, Frog, that you will be able to join the clan society in USA or UK (or both). Maybe you will get across to our clan gathering in mid August each year at Braemar/Ballater.

I don't think anyone can say anything else other than this. the only thing I would say is that it sometimes sounds like Far-ki-son. I think that may just be through accent though.
