Tartan Day in Canada - Bill C-402
So I was searching the web to see if there were any Tartan Day celebrations taking place in Calgary when I came across this:
http://www.standrew-caledonian.ab.ca...artanhome.html
I thought that the sixth of April was already recognized nationally as Tartan Day in Canada, but I guess it's the individual provinces that have recognized it.
Anyway, I thought some of the Canadian members of this board might be interested in it. The link above provides instructions on how to view the bill.

It started in Nova Scotia, but was soon recognized by all the Provinces. I have no idea what this is about.
I had a link to a better page, but wiki will have to do for now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tartan_Day

I fired off an e-mail to my rep this morning encouraging him to support the bill and to get the word out to the residents of Langley. The area was founded in the 1820s and most all the settlers were either Scot or Irish. National recognition of this would be wonderful.

it's just the difference between Provincial Government and Federal Government.
if Tartan Day was a Federal Holiday, that would make it a Paid Holiday under current labor laws.
so will it be recognized by the Feds, who knows.

Just because it is recognized federally does not make it a holiday (paid or un-paid). Rememberence day is federal but is not considered a holiday or a day off.

Dude, I don't want to get into politics, but that's just wrong. As for Tartan Day, I like the idea of it being recognized but not a holiday. Tartan!

I think I expressed myself poorly. My meaning was: I think it's wrong that Remembrance Day isn't a federal holiday. As soon as I saw the date, I knew it would be formally observed at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Regardless of one's politics, honoring fallen warrior forebears, to my eyes, seems a sacred responsibility.
I posted this because I was afraid you'd take me to have been saying, "Dude, YOU are wrong" somehow, which was not my intention.
But yes, I think Tartan Day should be federally recognized!

No problems, I fully agree with you that it should be a paid day off. I am concerned that over time though that the significance of the day is lost and people just see it as just a paid day off. There is/ has been discussion of making it a national holiday.

Not to debate, but the reason that Remembrance Day isn't a holiday is because holidays denote celebration and, well, fun. Remembrance Day shouldn't be that. I don't want people to start saying, "Hey! The eleventh! Let's go fishing!"
THAT isn't right.
