Hamish MacBeth
I've rented series one of Hamish MacBeth from the local media store. A couple of the characters appear here or there in kilts... but the series as a whole is a blast. One could describe it as a modern, Scottish version of Andy Griffith. A small-town police constable applies his wit and wisdom to living in a small town that's no better, and no worse than many other. The whole thing is a hoot.

There are two sets of DVDs - season one and two. They are totally charming and based on a series of books by MC Beaton. There must be 15 + books in this series that follows this highland copper as he keeps the peace in sleepy little Lochdubh.
Can you tell I'm a fan? Check netflix.

Robert Carlysle is an amazing actor, his performance as Hitler a few years ago should have got some kind of award.
My favourite ones are the stone of Scone episode and the one where "Wee Jock" gets run over (its so sad)
the pub always had some good Gaelic speakers as well.

haven't seen them all but the episode with the mafia trying to intimidate the village was classic.

You're right. BBCAmerica used to run the series, but now they have some really banal "comedies" (I use the term loosely) in its place.
The one where he lost Wee Jock was a very good episode, and the books are even more charming. When the townspeople in the kilts came running out on the moor to keep him from shooting the guy, it was really a nice scene.
Hope the BBC brings them back.

Isn't that the truth! One of my major motivations for switching from cable to Dish network was BBC America, and so far, I have been very disappointed in it -- no Monarch, no Hamish MacBeth, no Foyle's War, no Dad's Army -- just the trash.

Todd

Like Monarch of the Glen it is a classic. BBC needs to get on the ball and keep the Scottish based shows coming. Also, Shirley Henderson who played Isobel Sutherland (the news paper writer and 'love' interest) was also in the Harry Potter movies as Moaning Myrtle(sp).

I thought she looked familiar! She's much more attractive as Isobel than as Myrtle, though.

I first seen Hamish McBeth a hink aboot 10 yrs ago, then eventually it came oot on DVD so bought the box set , still ma favourite programme ever! It is filmed in a wee place called Plockton on the west coast next tae Loch Carron. A wis there aboot a year ago, took me an hoor tae drive there fae ma work. Got ma picture tain next tae the wee shoap and Hamish,s police station. A walked intae the shoap and asked if TV john wis aboot she said "yer ten years to late, thank god it wis terrible they just took over the village when filming" A didnae hae tae live through the distrupion o' filming but surely it wis worth it. I will post the picts when a hunt them oot!
