A Halloween reflection
My daughter came up with a pretty good question last night:
"Het, dad, d'ya think that if you're old enough to be smoking that you're too old to be trick-or-treating?"
....it's for the little kids, folks....not the grown ups.

I heartily disagree! My best trick-or-treating has been at college. Granted, it wasn't candy they gave us...

It's okay again once you enter your second childhood.
Of course, I went straight from my first to my second with no gap in between.

We have to grow older, we don't have to grow up! You are only as old as you feel.
Some days, I'm really really OLD!

No, I'm not talking about the parents or teens that accompany the little kids and sometimes get into the spirit and go along in their own costumes. I'm talking about the ones that are way past celebrating Halloween and look at it as free-candy-give-away-day and don't make any effort at a costume and are shoving a bag at you from between the little ones. I literally had to turn a few kids away toward the end of the evening because we had run out of candy...this has never happened before and I had to disappoint several little kids because of several greedy grown-ups.

Yes, I had that problem with trick-or-treaters, too. Young men as tall as me (I'm 6'2") with a hint of a beard and young ladies who were, shall we say, fully matured. All without costumes, of course!

Today on the drive to work this morning the DJs on the morning show that I listen to were complaining about how many people that were too old or weren't in costume came to their doors. A listener called in and said that he gives treats to anyone willing to dress up and get in the spirit of things. The kids got candy and the adults got shots of Bailey's(sp). I think that's a great attitude... you get into the spirit, you get treats.

No costume no candy at our house too - last night an adult accompanied a group of small kids to our door - he stood at the bottom of our stairs wearing, bar none, THE BEST Dracula costume and make-up I have ever in my life seen - including in the movies. He was amazing. To his credit he was waiting patiently for the kids to finish so he could escort them to the next house. I can down the stairs and insisted on giving him a treat. Maybe that's a different thing than you are talking about - either way - I am so glad I got to see him!

I do think, beyond a certain age unless you are accompanying small children you should knock off the door to door stuff. I don't know what that age is, but probably once you're old enough to host a Halloween party yourself it's time to let off.
I went out last night with the niece and nephew but didn't dress up and didn't go for candy. I did attend two different costume parties over the last month, so that was "Halloween" for me.

At $80 for a carton of cigarettes I'm willing to dress up and go door to door. That is if you're giving out ciggies instead of candy. In my defence, in England we never celebrated Hallowe'en. I came to Canada at the age of ten so I've been making up lost time ever since.
