    Doctron Brown

I am doing a geneology search on the Brown family of North Carolina and I am stuck at Doctron Brown of Bertie County. He was born in 1808 (or 1810:looking at census records, he either goofed on his birthday one time or someone transcribed his age incorrectly during one of the census years). His name shows up in the census on different occasions as Doctron, Doctrine and Docton. Has anyone else been researching the Brown family in NC? We also have Browns that seem to like to flip back and forth from Hertford, Bertie to Vance and or Granville Counties. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Brown is one of the hardest clans to trace. The name is so common as to be nearly impossible unless you can call in census/other scource.

Many have tried to link Brown to the highlands.. and ultimatly failed. Not because they were wrong, but rather that they simply could not document it.

Tried Y DNA yet? It may be more useful for telling you where not to look than where to look, but if you are truly at a brick wall, it may be you best hope of making progress. See the FAQ at www.ftdna.com

    The very visible, invisible Browns

I find Browns scattered throughout the census records in NC and with 8-13 kids being fairly normal, they must have been a very loving bunch. Trying to find this one guy is like finding a needle in a stack of needles.

Thanks for the sugestion on YDNA. That will be my next step.

It might be quite helpful. With fairly common names, it can be useful in sorting them out and deciding who is related to whom.

Testing 25 or 36 markers is usually the most helpful. 12 aren't enough to tell you much, and 63 usually aren't needed immediately. With FTDNA you can easily upgrade later to more if you get a perfect match at 25 or 36 without having to re-test.
