Wow - The Power of E-Bay!!!

Stillwater Black Watch Thrifty Kilt XXL

I went back to see what this sold for:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=330271368043

    Winning bid: US $51.00

Brand New direct from Stillwater Kilts $29.95

    http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Sti...-Kilt%e2%84%a2

I must have missed the description detail where it indicates it was worn by Elvis or has a haggis stain in the shape of Jesus!

Just goes to prove what Barnum said. . . . . a well known fact of Auctions; people get caught up in the excitement of bidding, and lose sight of the actual value of the item. Sorta like the gambler trying to recoup losses by doubling the bet, but the odds remain the same.

Sad to see there were actually three still in the bidding war after it had exceeded the value of the item!

Perhaps they didn't know the source and never thought to check the actual price?

Considering the seller referenced Stillwater's site in their listing

But also consider. . . the last two bidders who drove it past retail value have 8 and 4 eBay transactions to their name, respectively, and bid within moments of the auction close.

Any bets on the likelihood of this item actually being PAID for? Probably much the same odds as those potato chips that look like Leno "going" for hundreds of dollars. . .

Just keep an eye out here for a "Look at my new-used SWK thrify!!" thread, then everyone can pile on.

Always, however, in a gentlemanly fashion, of course!

I buy a lot of stuff on e-bay, but if I am interested in something, I first check out the lowest available price. Then I place my bid to be several dollars below that.

If I win it, good. If I lose it, I go and buy it from the lowest place.

    Seems pretty simple to me.

I am always suspicious of bidders that have a high percentage of bidding with one vendor:
geekified (winner): hasn't bought anything on ebay since 2003
    d***r: 50% of 8 purchases total
    e***m: 7% of 75 (looks ligit)
    T***T: 0% looks ligit
    h***a: 100% of 102 purchases
    y***o: 100% of 40 purchases
    t***m: 33% of 474

bidders must beware of sellers bidding there own goods up. They can always offer you a second chance offer... so they are able to get as high a price as you bid.

I also like to check completed listings to get a sense of the range of final prices.
